Hero Sadie was home alone with her new owner Brian last week when he had a stroke. The dog licked her owner's face to keep him awake and then dragged him to his phone to call for help.

Brian says he has Sadie to thank for his life.

Sadie was surrendered to Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge, and was seemingly confused, having lost the one family she knew, the shelter said.

"Sadie is a loyal dog, but nervous and protective with new people, making her a more difficult placement," RBARI said.

But a few months ago, a man named Brian came into the shelter looking to adopt Sadie. Although Sadie's bio noted she was especially nervous with men, Brian felt a special bond with the dog.

He valued her intelligence, hesitancy to trust and fierce loyalty once she did form that trust.

Brian gave Sadie a second chance at life, adopting her and welcoming her home, RBARI said.

Last week, Brian suffered a stroke while he was home alone with Sadie. When he was collapsed, Sadie never left his side. She licked his face to keep him awake, and helped drag him across the room to his cell phone.

"Sadie was the only reason that Brian was able to call for help," RBARI said. "This time, Sadie gave Brian a second chance at life."

Sadie’s bio noted, “As is common to her breed, she is loyal and loving with her chosen people.” No one could agree more than Brian, who is alive today thanks to Sadie’s devotion and quick thinking. Sadie is staying with family while Brian recovers in a rehab center. They FaceTime every night, and are counting down the days until they can reunite!
